SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A Springfield K-9 officer was able to track down a suspect in the pouring rain after he nearly hit an officer's cruiser and crashed into a traffic island at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police initially saw the man driving a Nissan Maxima erratically in the downtown area. When officers ran the plate, the vehicle came back unregistered, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver, later identified as 19-year-old Holyoke resident Victor Martinez, sped away on Worthington Street. Police decided to not chase the vehicle because of poor road conditions due to heavy rain, Delaney said.

Shortly after the suspect fled, Springfield Police K-9 Officer Tony Tyler spotted Martinez speeding through the intersection of Worthington and Armory streets. Martinez nearly hit his patrol car and crashed into a traffic island after hitting a street sign, causing significant damage to the car, Delaney said.

Martinez fled on foot, but Tyler and his German Shepherd K-9, Ares, were able to locate him in the rain – something that is very difficult to do in the best conditions, Delaney said. The officer and his partner tracked Martinez through back yards on Magazine and Grant streets before finally arresting him at 32 Lincoln St. as he was attempting to hide in the back yard, Delaney said.

The vehicle that Martinez was driving was possibly stolen and police officers attempted to contact the owner when Martinez was arrested.

Police charged Martinez, of 560 S. Summer St., Holyoke, with failure to stop for police, operating without a license, reckless driving and resisting arrest, Delaney said.
