MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A memorial fundraiser is being held for a 22-year-old victim in an apparent murder-suicide in the parking lot of an East Valley school this month.
Sirrine Elementary School is holding a car wash on Saturday, April 26 for Victoria Gameros, who was shot to death at Poston Junior High in Mesa on April 13.
The car wash is from 8 a.m. until noon at Arby's located at 2748 S. Alma School Rd., just north of Guadalupe in Mesa.
All proceeds will be donated to the family to help with funeral costs. Gameros' mother works in the administration office at Sirrine Elementary.
When officers arrived at Poston Junior High School at 2433 E. Adobe St. on April 13 at 10:45 a.m., they found 25-year-old Jonathon Vargas, of Mesa, dead inside the a black four-door sedan, said Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato.
Gameros was in the passenger's seat and was rushed to a hospital, where she later died, Landato said.
The preliminary investigation showed that Vargas and Gameros lived together in Mesa and had been in a relationship for about 2 1/2 years, Landato said.
Investigators said they didn't know what led to the shootings but a handgun was found inside the car, Landato said.
Landato said officers developed evidence that it may be a murder-suicide.
The incident was unrelated to the school, Landato said.
The Gameros family said Victoria Gameros brought out a smile in everyone.
"Our daughter Victoria was a beautiful person inside and out. Everyone that met or knew her, knew her as a kind and giving person. She touched many people's hearts in the short time she lived. She was the oldest of our three kids. Victoria graduated from Westwood High School and started classes at Mesa Community College and eventually got a job at Wells Fargo Bank. Victoria comes from a very large family which originates from Miami, AZ. She had a little brother Daniel and a little sister Adriana who loved their sister very much and are devastated for their sister's death. The three best things that ever came into her mother Carol's and my life. She loved her family and her friends very much as they did her. She brought out the smile in everyone. Victoria always brightened my heart and we will miss her forever and ever. I want to thank everyone for their prayers and may God Be With All. -- The Gameros Family"
