COTTONWOOD, AZ (CBS5) -

A Phoenix hiker who fell nearly 200 feet and got stuck on a steep canyon ridge was rescued Saturday in northern Arizona.

The 45-year-old man was on a solo canyoneering trip in Wilbur Canyon near Cottonwood.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said it received a safety alert at about 6:30 p.m. and launched an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter to the area.

The air rescue unit spotted the hiker. Search and rescue personnel climbed up to the patient on the ridge while another team hiked to an area on the rim above the scene.

The rescue team was able to reach the hiker at about 4 a.m. and provided initial care.

Authorities airlifted the man to another location where he was transferred to Guardian Air Transport and flown to John C Lincoln North Mountain Hospital in Phoenix.
