Three dogs had to be treated after two coyotes jumped out and snatched them by the neck on a popular trail in Southington.
The dog owner, Jeff Burgess, called police to report the brutal attack off of Flanders Road around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
"All of a sudden I hear a bunch of growling and barking, so I run around the corner and the two coyotes had the two little ones in their mouth and ran off with them," Burgess said.
Burgess next move may have saved his pets' lives.
"I grabbed a stick, ran, yelled and screamed," Burgess said.
The dogs were taken to Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital in Berlin where the dogs were treated. Burgess said the 15-minute drive seemed like it took forever, but by doing it he likely saved his dogs life.
"They had big puncture wounds, drain it and stitches," Burgess said.
Two of the dogs were seriously injured after the coyote grabbed them by their necks, and the other had to get a booster shot.
Police said this is the only report they have received about any coyotes. The trail is popular with runners and walkers, especially those with pets.
Police officers went out to the trail to look around, but did not find any signs of coyotes.
State environmental officials said the best way to protect your pets from the animals is to keep them on a leash and under close surveillance.
Coyotes can run up to 40 miles an hour. They're usually alone, but can travel in packs.
Neighbors said they are always on high alert and will be more "cautious."
"(I've) seen coyote tracks in the winter, those are obvious," said John Smayda, who was walking his dog in the area of the attack.
