Hundreds out of jobs in South Windsor

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) -

Hundreds of workers showed up for their jobs at Clear Edge Power in South Windsor only to find the doors to the building locked.

There are close to 400 people including assembly workers, mechanics, electricians, machinists, plumbers and inspectors are without a job at the renewable energy company.

"I don't know, I am speechless," said employee Pete Gieraltowski.

When the second shift workers came to work around 3:30 p.m., they were let in only to get their belongings because the company was out of business.

"We were supposed to be furloughed in blocks of two weeks," said one employee, who wished not to be identified. "Then they took a survey for you to sign up, and then today came and they shut the doors."

Many of the employees told Eyewitness News they have double digit years on the job and they said they do not know where their next check is coming from.

"There are people here with well over 40 years worth of service that lost their jobs today," said employee Mark Perrone.

Town manager Matthew B. Galligan told Eyewitness News he got a call from corporate office of Clear Edge Power saying it was going to file for bankruptcy protection. But, Galligan said he had no idea people would be unemployed on Thursday.

"I have 33 years of seniority with a severance package including 26 weeks of full pay severance and six months of insurance and college reimbursement, we're probably being told we'll receive none of that," Perrone said.

Eyewitness News reached out to the corporate office for Clear Edge Power, but numerous calls were not returned.

Workers told Eyewitness News that Clear Edge Power was sold by United Technologies Corporation last year.

Most workers told Eyewitness News they are hoping the machinists union can help them out because they have nowhere to go. Calls from Eyewitness News to the union workers regional office were not returned.
