A 55-year-old man died after being hit by a train in Groton on Monday morning.

Fire officials said the crash happened near School Street in the West Mystic section of Groton. They said the unidentified man was "struck by a train and thrown into the Mystic River," police said.

Crews got the man, who was from out-of-state, out of the Mystic River and transported him to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where he died on Monday.

Amtrak said northbound Acela Express train No. 2190 traveling from New York to Boston came into contact with the trespasser at about 9 a.m.

No roads were closed, but the train was delayed. There were 207 passengers on board.

The name was not released until notification of next of kin, police said.

The incident into the crash remains under investigation.
