A Springfield man allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a pregnant 19-year-old girl's head Monday morning and demanded she give him her money.

Police were called to 147 Allen St. about 8 a.m. in response to the victim's 911 call. She said a man wearing a red sweatshirt and blue jeans with a black backpack put a gun to her temple, but when she insisted she did not have any money to give, the man fled down Allen Street, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police in the Forest Park Badge Unit immediately responded and began searching for the suspect, who was eventually spotted near 1 Allen St. When backup arrived, officers disarmed the suspect and confiscated a loaded .22 caliber revolver, Delaney said.

Police also found three bags of cocaine in the suspect's backpack. He was positively identified by the victim and arrested, Delaney said.

Police charged Tavar J. Jones, 24, of 31 Tyler St., Springfield, with armed assault with intent to rob, carrying a firearm, possession of ammunition, assault by means of a dangerous weapon (firearm) and possession of cocaine, according to a police report.

"Mr. Jones is no stranger to the SPD and has been arrested in the past," Delaney said.

He will be arraigned in Springfield District Court.

The victim was shaken up by the incident, but she did not require medical attention.
