Volunteers deliver hot meals to homebound Nashville seniors

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

St. Luke's Community House could not exist without its loyal band of volunteers. They Pay It 4Ward every day by serving many of the senior residents in one west Nashville neighborhood.

Once a week for just one hour a day, Tim Dial gives up part of his morning. So does Carroll Kimball.

They are part of a group of about 30 regular committed volunteers who make sure the residents, often older and without family, get a solid meal every day.

"Some people think they're just poor folks. Well, that's not the case. Any of us could need meals," Dial said. "Sickness, all kinds of things."

Dial has been doing this every week for 15 years. Kimball is now in her eighth year.

"I have loved it. It is one of the highlights of my week," Kimball said.

This is not a government program. It's all based on donations as part of the daily mission of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

The meals do not come with a message or sermon. It really is just meat and potatoes.

"Let's see what they have to eat today - roasted chicken, pasta and apple sauce," Dial said.

In a way the volunteers are fed, too, with a good feeling.

"As a Christian, I said we need to make ourselves useful without rusting or taking up space," Dial said.

The food is a critical necessity, but just seeing the volunteers' cars on the streets is meaningful, too.

"It's about so much more, to me, than just delivering a hot meal to each senior. The real gratification comes from being able to check on them and make sure they're OK," Kimball said.

Kimball's delivery runs often include her popular passenger pooch, Scout.

"A lot of folks on my route know his name and love to see him," she said.

Ninety meals are delivered each day and St. Luke's needs more drivers. If you want to help Pay It 4Ward, call St. Luke's Community House at 615-350-7893 and take the first step toward being a volunteer.
