Georgia Power announced Thursday, May 15, that Fort Benning will be one of three U.S. Army posts in the state chosen to be a site for their new solar generation facilities.

The solar generation facilities—which will be built, owned and operated by Georgia Power—will each be capable of producing about 30 megawatts (MW) AC of solar energy, the company says. The facilities are expected to be the largest solar generation facilities operating on U.S. military installations.

"Through constructive regulation and thoughtful energy policy planning, Georgia is leading the way in developing cost-effective solar generation for customers," said Norrie McKenzie, vice president of renewable development for Georgia Power. "The agreement with the U.S. Army not only marks another step for Georgia Power's solar initiatives, but further enhances the state's position as a solar leader and will strengthen both the bases and the surrounding communities."

Fort Stewart near Savannah and Fort Gordon near Augusta will also receive the solar generation facilities, which are projected to be complete by the end of 2016.
