A New Haven resident is being credited with helping to stop a sexual assault in the Elm City on Saturday afternoon.
The unidentified witness told police that a man, who was later identified as 30-year-old Wilman Carrasco, was slapping a woman's buttocks while she was walking on the streets of New Haven around 12:30 p.m.
Carrasco followed the woman until he "pulled her into a yard on Trumbull Street, where he pushed her to the ground and got on top of her," the eyewitness told police.
The woman screamed, which the witness heard as he was driving down State Street. The eyewitness turned his car around, drove up the wrong way on State Street so he could get to the woman as quickly as possible, and he was able to stop the attempted sexual assault by Carrasco.
Police were able to locate Carrasco in the area of Bradley Street where he was arrested. He was charged with criminal attempt to commit sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery and larceny.
The incident remains under investigation.
