PHOENIX (CBS5) -

There were a lot of tight hugs and tears from parishioners outside the Mother of Mercy Mission Church in Phoenix on Thursday.

They rushed there from across the Valley, when they got news that one of their priests had been shot and killed and another badly beaten during a violent attack at the church Wednesday night.

Elizabeth Papandrea said her six children have grown up in the church and were extremely close with the Rev. Kenneth Walker and the Rev. Joseph Terra.

Walker was killed in the attack. Terra is recovering at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix.

"It's like a family member," said Papandrea. "We're a very close community here. We're not just friends, we're family."

Just about everyone who spoke to CBS 5 News had a story about Walker or Terra  spending time in their home, baptizing their children, or presiding over communions and confirmations.

Romulo Guevara said it was just a couple months ago when Terra came over to bless his house.

That's when Guevera learned about Terra's love of classical music.

"That was kind of a treat for me, to play some Chopin when he visited the house," said Guevara. "He's got to get better because I need to play some more for him."

Bill Haley said that both priests were excellent role models for his children.

In fact, it was just last year Father Walker visited Haley's family at their cabin in Payson.

"They were leaders and men of good character that I could entrust my sons to learn what it is to be a man under their charge," said Haley.
