MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) -

The driver of a vehicle that struck a utility pole and burst into flames in Manchester has died.

Police said the crash was reported around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday on East Center Street at Holl Street.

They said a Nissan Maxima had been traveling at a high rate of speed on Holl Street when it exited the road to the west and collided with a utility pole at the corner with East Center Street.

The driver was trapped in the heavily damaged vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to Hartford Hospital and later flown to the Bridgeport Burn Center.

Police did not identity him.

Investigators said it appeared speed and driver impairment were factors.

Members of the Manchester Police Traffic Unit and the Metro Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to investigate.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash and had information about it was asked to call the Manchester Police Department at 860-645-5560.
