Car crashes into Manchester home early Sunday

Posted: Updated:

Manchester police are investigating an early morning crash Sunday where a vehicle drove into a home on Hilliard Street and caught fire.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, drove over the front lawn and crashed into the home. Officials said the driver was not seriously injured.

The mangled vehicle was taken away Sunday morning, and neighbors said the street isn't usually busy in the early morning hours.

"Stuff is knocked off shelves and walls and things inside. It doesn't appear too bad. There's a couple of cracks over there in the corner, so we're going to have to get that checked out," said Susan Dorne, who lives in the home that was hit.

She said thankfully she and her boyfriend were not home when the crash happened, but they arrived within minutes of the crash.

"This telephone pole behind us has been hit a number of times by people coming down the street that way that miss the turn, they end up coming across the lawn and hitting that telephone pole. I was sort of expected that's what had happened, but the car had come from that direction which is unusual," Dorne added.

The car was traveling so fast it went right through a utility wire, came within inches of hitting a neighbor's brand new car.

Aside from the cracks and burn marks outside of the home, the building inspector said the home was safe for Dorne and her boyfriend to be in.

Neighbors said speed is an issue in the area.

Peter Shah owns a nearby convenience store on the corner of Hilliard and Westerly streets and said he sees people speeding all of the time.

"He's a lucky guy that his house didn't get that damaged, plus he didn't get any injuries," Shah said.
