WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
A firefighter and her husband were arrested on assault charges after the couple got into a fight in West Hartford early Wednesday morning.
Officers were called to a "domestic violence complaint" at an apartment on Kane Street around 1 a.m., and after the brawl the couple learned at the hospital that they are expecting a child.
Police said 47-year-old Vincent Adell, who was bleeding from his head, eye and lip, came out of the apartment to talk with officers. The right side of his face was also swollen, police said.
A short time later, 38-year-old Marsha McCurdy, who is a member of the West Hartford Fire Department, came out of the apartment to talk with police. Police said her mouth was bleeding and the "right side of her face was also visibly swollen."
Investigators said the couple gave "conflicting reports" of the fight and the cause of it. Both were arrested and charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
Adell was taken to John Dempsey Hospital where he received stitches for his lip. McCurdy was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment, where she was told that she is pregnant.
After the arrest, McCurdy is still an "active" member of the West Hartford Fire Department and no investigations are pending.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the couple recently got married. They added they were "shocked" by the news, but are happy that there is some good news coming out of this incident.
"That's surprising because they are quiet people, really," said neighbor Jovia Komuhendo. "I have mixed feelings, little things can turn into big things and I'm sorry it happened that way."
McCurdy and Adell are being held on $25,000 bond and are expected to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Aug. 20.
