Maricopa County Risk Management has denied workers compensation benefits to Phillip Grigg, the MCSO posse member critically injured last December when rushing to the aide of a Phoenix police officer in trouble.
Grigg was shot in the chest and sustained three different life-threatening injuries as a result, according to his doctor. Grigg spent six months in the hospital and experiences some touch-and-go times. His wife told CBS 5 News, there were times she was not sure he would ever make it home.
But on Wednesday, Grigg looking frail and thin, was wheeled before cameras and reporters for the first time since the shooting incident on the afternoon of New Years Eve 2013. He told reporter he felt fortunate to be alive and honored to have the opportunity to be a posse member. He did not address financial or compensation issues.
On Thursday, CBS 5 News confirmed with Maricopa County that on June 20, the county formally denied Grigg's claim for compensation. No reason was given on the denial form, but a spokeswoman for the county said Grigg was denied because he did not meet the statutory criteria for compensation.
Grigg is a volunteer posse member and not on the county payroll.
The Sheriff's Office donated $15,000 to the Griggs from the sheriff's memorial fund. And a couple of thousand dollars in other donations were also given to the family. But that will not even scratch the surface of the bills that have accumulated from Grigg's six-month hospital stay. He also will have to have additional surgeries and care, according to his doctor.
Grigg is fighting the denial and has filed a formal complaint with the Industrial Commission of Arizona.
