CCSO: Oak Creek Canyon businesses open after flooding

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Oak Creek Canyon businesses are open, even though the Forest Service campgrounds and forest service recreation areas in Oak Creek Canyon are closed, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

A section of State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon near the Slide wildfire burn area reopened after flooding subsided, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

SR 89A had been shut down near the Switchbacks section of SR 89A, from milepost 388 to milepost 391, about 10 miles north of Sedona.

The heaviest rain occurred in Sterling Canyon, Pump House wash and the northern portions of Oak Creek. Lesser rainfall amounts of one-quarter inch fell in the southern portion of the burn scar.

Coconino County Public Health officials advise people not to drink untreated creek water or swim in the creek water because there may be bacteria from the flooding.

The human-caused Slide Fire, which started May 20 around 4 p.m. in Oak Creek Canyon just north of Slide Rock State Park, blackened 21,227 acres. It cost $10.1 million to battle the blaze.
