Technical Discussion: Storms weakening, but packed a punch! - WFSB 3 Connecticut

Hartford, CT -

Update, 9pm. Well, if you watched our early evening newscasts I talked about a cluster of storms in NY and NE PA, and if they held together could cause quite a punch here in CT. Well, did they ever hold together! In fact, they intensified just west of the CT border, and caused 3 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in Litchfield, New Haven, and Fairfield Counties. We've had numerous reports of trees and wires down, thanks (or no thanks!) to damaging wind gusts. Vivid lightning and torrential downpours were also 2 big impacts. As I write this update now, the line is weakening. Rain/thunder is still possible in E. CT tonight, but the severe threat is much less now.

Happy Monday Evening!

After a nice, comfortable weekend, the heat and humidity returned today! In fact, we hit 90 at Bradley International Airport. That's the 4th time we've hit 90 in the last week! The thunderstorm potential is also with us this evening, especially in Western CT. There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch just to the west of us, across a good chunk of NY state. Some warnings have been issued for NY and W. MA, and we'll keep a close eye on those storms as they track into CT. The storms have had a history of producing damaging winds, heavy rains, and even small hail. We will certainly pass along any warnings as they come into the Early Warning Weather Center. Litchfield County has the best chance to see isolated strong storms this evening.

You may want to keep the air on tonight, as lows are forecast to drop around 70 with humidity-not the best sleeping weather. Tomorrow will be hazy, hot and humid with highs once again approaching the 90 degree mark. In the afternoon/evening we will run the risk for isolated storms. Again, it's the type of situation where some towns will stay bone dry, while others get soaked in a downpour. If you have outdoor plans tomorrow night, keep an eye on the radar as scattered storms will develop.

Thunderstorms are most likely Wednesday as a slow moving cold front finally crosses the state. Before it does so, highs on Wed will once again be between 85-90, with high humidity. Behind the front, a slightly more refreshing air mass will move in. Thursday looks gorgeous with a mix of sun and clouds, and highs in the mid-80's. Fri/Sat look great too: sunny, warm, with fairly comfortable levels of humidity, though it will start to creep up on Saturday. Another front looks to approach for the 2nd half of the weekend, increasing our chances for rain once again.

Have a great week!
