PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An 8-year-old boy riding a bicycle died after he was hit by a car in Phoenix on Wednesday night.

The boy, identified as Richard Vejar, was struck when he rode his bike through a stop sign and into the intersection of 26th Drive and Roeser Road about 8:30 p.m., Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

He was struck by a westbound Dodge Nitro driven by a 37-year-old woman, Thompson said.

Thompson said the woman stayed at the scene and preliminary reports show impairment didn't appear to be a factor.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, Thompson said.

Thompson said the investigation was continuing.
