An illegal charter bus broke down in Phoenix, leaving 31 passengers stranded on Thursday afternoon, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
The people on the bus were on their way home from Las Vegas to San Antonio, TX, when the bus broke down in the downtown Phoenix area, the spokesman said.
Passengers started feeling symptoms of heat stroke so they called medics for help, one passenger said.
"They realized this was a medical issue so they called an engine company. When that captain arrived he made a very good decision in trying to get a city bus and also our rehab unit to come out and basically cool these people down," Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Nunez said.
The passengers then waited in an air-conditioned city bus until the charter bus was fixed or another bus arrived to take them home.
