(CNN) - Yellowstone National Park says it's temporarily shutting down a road because heat has partially melted it.

The park said extreme heat has caused thick oil to bubble to the surface. It damaged the blacktop and made the road unsafe for driving.

Firehole Lake Drive is a popular, scenic road.

The 3.3 mile loop drive takes visitors past great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser and Firehole Lake.

The road is expected to be closed for several days while repairs are made.
