A police pursuit came to an end for a naked man who jumped into the Blue River in an attempt to get away. Officers would then rescue the man who was struggling in the water.
Kansas City police said they responded to a call about 9 a.m. Tuesday that someone was trying to break into vehicles in the 7400 block of East 12th Street in a parking lot.
Police say the man was going from vehicle to vehicle before he was confronted. They add that he was acting erratic and agitated.
Officers arrested the man, but then took off and a foot chase ensued. The chase led police to the river banks where the handcuffed suspect ran down the embankment, took his clothes off and jumped into the river. He was high on drugs, police said.
Police were on the bank of the river watching the scene unfold. When the decision was made to go get him, police entered the water.
When they reached him, his head was barely above water. It took another officer to come over to keep the suspect's head above water. It eventually took other officers to get the man up the bank.
The man was finally taken to an area hospital about 9:45 a.m. for evaluation. There is no word on the charges he will be facing.
Chopper5 pilot Gregg Bourdon watched the whole situation unfold.
"We could see him swimming away as best as he could, but we don't know why he was doing that because he wasn't going anywhere," Bourdon said. "When we saw the individual down in the water, he was splashing around and swimming as best as you can when you're handcuffed, which obviously he was having some trouble. We were a little concerned he might go underwater."
