Vigil held for Elmwood student who died of possible meningitis

WOODVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local student was remembered Wednesday night after health leaders say she passed away from a possible case of meningitis.

The community gathered for a vigil near Elmwood's softball field to remember seventh-grader Mackenzie Shaffer. People who knew Shaffer say she loved to play softball, so they chose to hold the vigil at the field.

A minister spoke at the vigil. He said coming together is the first step of healing for the community.

The Wood County Health Department released a statement saying other children may have been exposed to the meningitis, but at this point, they don't believe it was bacterial or contagious.

Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache and drowsiness. Health Department leaders say to get your children checked out if they show these symptoms.
