An 18-year-old man was arrested after court documents show that he touched a 12-year-old girl's buttocks after he broke into her family's home in Montville on Tuesday night.

An unidentified 12-year-old girl went to sleep in the basement of her home with her brother and a friend around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

A short time later, she woke up after someone was "grabbing/squeezing her butt," according to court documents. She asked the man who he was and he said "Jon from up the street."

"I've seen you a couple of times through that window and wanted to say hi," said the suspect, who was later identified as Alex Petherick, according to court documents.

Petherick, who lives near the victim, asked the girl if he could sleep with them on the bed. The girl told Petherick to get out multiple times, court documents stated. Petherick eventually fled the home and the girl told her father about the incident.

The father of the daughter immediately called police after hearing the disturbance and reported the intruder.

Detectives and state troopers immediately searched the area for Petherick, but were unable to locate him.

With the help of witnesses and evidence, Petherick was found by police at his home on Thursday.

After talking with police, Petherick admitted to "going out on 'excursions' or 'journeys' at night over the past month."

He later admitted to touching the 12-year-old girl, but he told police that he did not know at first if it was a boy or girl. Petherick said he had "no intentions" of hurting anyone or stealing anything and "was just being drunk and stupid," according to court documents.

Petherick was charged with home invasion, fourth-degree sexual assault, and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Petherick is currently being held on a $200,000 bond after he was arraigned at Norwich Superior Court on Friday.

A protective order was issued. Petherick was placed on medical watch, was issued an electronic monitoring bracelet and is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with any minors.

Police said that Petherick was "involved in multiple incidents" including trying to get inside cars at the Chili's parking lot in Montville.
