Grandson and grandmother charged in drug dealing investigation

PLAINFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

A local grandmother and her grandson were recently charged with selling drugs in areas between Plainfield and Hartford.

Plainfield police have arrested 24-year-old Nicholas Coffey and his grandmother 65-year-old Elaine Coffey, along with a friend, 34-year-old Jody Read after receiving an anonymous tip about an abundance of short-term traffic in and around the area of 3 Hemlock Dr.

Police received information that Nicholas was selling drugs from that residence, and that he was being driven around by Read, selling heroin.

On Tuesday, Police said Nicholas, Elaine and Read were all in Hartford picking up heroin to sell and use together.

Police said the trio would travel to and from Hartford utilizing Route 14 through Plainfield, Canterbury and Willimantic.

On Tuesday, police found Read's car traveling east on Route 14 in Plainfield and all three were in the vehicle.

Elaine was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, failure to keep narcotics in proper container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Read was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nicholas was charged with conspiracy to commit possession of heroin, conspiracy to commit possession of heroin with intent to sell, operating under suspensions and traveling unreasonable fast.

All three were placed on a $20,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4.
