A shed that holds equipment and food for the Avon Little League was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday morning and police are calling it suspicious.
After multiple 911 calls, firefighters arrived to find a fully-involved fire at Sperry Park off Simsbury Road in Avon around 3:20 a.m.
Crews were able to get the fire under control fairly quickly. In addition to the shed being fully engulfed in flames, there was a grass fire next to the concession stand, where some damage occurred.
There were no reported injures.
The shed holds equipment including a pitching machine, T-shirts and hats and has a freezer in it as well for storage of food that is sold by volunteers from the Avon Little League. President Mike Ryan said the contents of items lost total between $5,000 and $10,000.
The shed also stored a sign that honored a member of the Avon Little League that had passed away.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Police said they believe that one or more individuals were in the area at the time of the fires and left the area by way of Fischer Drive, to Ensign Drive, to Bickford Drive to Climax Road.
"Certainly disappointed there are people out there that would do something like this,"Ryan said. "We will continue to play ball."
The operating budget for Avon Little League is generated from registration fees, sponsorships and donations, Ryan said.
