Produce business moves into Erie Street Market

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A unique business is moving into their new location in downtown Toledo. Sustainable Local Foods is setting up shop at the Erie Street Market, another sign that the area is starting to bounce back.

"It's an amazing part of town," said Bryan D. Ellis, lead grower at Sustainable Local Foods. "It's always hopping; it's a great place to be."

One of the reasons Sustainable Local Foods is moving to the market is for the climate-controlled atmosphere, so they can produce hydroponic vegetables year-round.

"We keep a small nutrient flow at the root zone of all these plants 24-7, and it's the exact amount of what it is these plants need all of the time," Ellis explained. "I have monitors that will actually give me a call if something's off."

Some of the vegetables grown include a variety of lettuces, kale and spinach. They plan to add tomatoes and peppers in the near future.

City leaders say they're happy to see Sustainable Local Foods in the Erie Street Market.

"These buildings were constructed a hundred years ago as produce warehousing, and we're putting them back into use for produce," said Toledo Economic Development Commissioner Bill Burkett. "They are a wholesale distributor, they're not a retail distributor, but I think it works in conjunction and compliments the farmers' market."

Sustainable Local Foods also has a booth set up at the Toledo Farmers' Market every Saturday, and their produce can be found for sale in some of the local supermarkets.

They will be completely move in and set up at their new location within a few weeks.
