A Norwich couple accused of selling heroin over the website Craigslist faced a judge on Wednesday.
Court officials said 18-year-old Alexis Chidester and 28-year-old Thomas Birkbeck Jr. were arraigned in court after police they used the popular internet marketplace to sell drugs.
Police said they received a tip about the online sale earlier this month and contacted Chidester through the website. They set up a meeting in Norwichtown on July 10.
After conducting surveillance at the area, officers found Chidester and Birkbeck making sales to undercover officers and others.
Police said they seized several hundred dollars worth of packaged heroin.
Norwich Police Captain Patrick Daley said this was quick work by their community policing unit.
"We get tips from all different sources out there and we try and act on all of them, so social media is one of many tools, anonymous tip lines and phone calls" are others, Daley added.
Both were released on a $25,000 bond each and will appear in court next month. Birkbeck Jr. has another court date on Monday for unrelated charges.
The internet has become a popular place where people buy and sell just about everything.
"It's all over the place. Kids are dying with needles sticking in their arms. It's horrible," said Susan Dunn of Griswold.
