NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -

Norwich police are investigating after an early Friday morning crash killed a 27-year-old man.

According to police, Frank Jones of Norwich was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. on Friday at Hartford Hospital.

Police said they were called to the area of 348 West Thames Street just after midnight following numerous 911 calls reporting a vehicle had struck a stone retaining wall.

When police arrived they discovered a black Mercedes Benz CLK500 had smashed into the wall and the driver was still trapped in the vehicle.

Members of the East Great Plain Fire Department were able to extricate the driver and he was rushed to Backups Hospital and then flown by Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital.

Witnesses in the area said Jones was seen just prior to the crash speeding and passing vehicles on the left as it traveled along West Thames Street.

Police had to close West Thames Street for over an hour as they conducted their investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has any other pertinent information is urged to call the Norwich Police Department at 860-886-5561.
