Gov. Deval Patrick has declined the request of Chicopee officials to meet with them over his proposal to use Westover Air Reserve Base to house illegal immigrant children.
Mayor Richard Kos and State Rep. Joseph Wagner called on the governor to visit the Chicopee so they could further discuss his offer of using the base to temporarily shelter immigrant children illegally crossing the U.S. border.
Kos, Wagner, and many others have expressed concerns over the plan and are asking for more details.
When Kos asked Friday morning, Patrick said that he has no intention of meeting with them, and that it is now in the hands of the federal government, which must examine the viability of the proposal.
Rosemary J. Powers, Deputy Chief of Staff for Government Affairs for Gov. Patrick said that although Patrick declined to meet, Secretary of Health and Human Services John Polanowicz "would be pleased to do so."
