PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An alligator was spotted in a ditch along Hull Prairie Road Thursday - an unusual sight in Perrysburg.

Paul Garland lives right across the street from where the gator was found. He owns an exotic reptile business and has experience handling them. He was able to wrangle the alligator and remove it from a ditch.

"He was kind of tucked behind some bushes, so you start by touching his tail a little bit, get him to move out, and when it moves out, use a stick or a hat, to tap him on the head and get him riled up a little bit, till he gets in a good position, and grab his tail," Garland said.

He says this gator was small enough that he could lift it up by its tail and hold its mouth shut. He says he's never heard of a situation quite like this in the area, and he's guessing someone may have had it as a pet and let it go.

"Alligators don't just swim from Florida to Ohio, so it was probably someone's pet and got too big for them to handle, and they just dumped it, not necessarily there, but somewhere in the river system," he said.

The Department of Agriculture says the gator is now headed to a sanctuary in Columbus.
