Officers swarmed 25 Donna Dr. in New Haven early Sunday morning.
Police said they received a 911 call just before 8 a.m. from a man who claimed he'd just shot a person who tried to attack him with a knife.
The alleged shooter, 71-year-old Anthony Anamasi is in custody, according to police. He is cooperating with investigators.
Now police are trying to figure out if the shooting was self defense.
When police arrived to the apartment complex, they found 23-year-old Leroy Brown suffering from a gunshot wound to the side of his head.
"My boyfriend woke me up and there was a whole bunch of cop cars and I said 'oh another day,'" Melissa Basley said.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that Anamasi is a good guy.
"He's nice. Very nice. He's always out here speaking to people and cleaning up the properties. He's a real nice person," Lisa Bradshaw said.
Some people who live in the apartment complex said that area of town has a lot of crime and they wish they could move out.
"If we could afford to leave from here, I would never even stay one night. That's all I can afford, to live here," Ahmed Elkharrez said.
Brown was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment and is currently in critical condition, according to police.
"I hope he gets better and my condolences go out to his family," Bradshaw said.
Anamasi has been charged with first-degree assault for this shooting.
