SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Narcotics officers set up surveillance downtown Tuesday evening and made multiple arrests after reports of drug dealers in the area had been pouring in to the Springfield Police Department.

Dealers had set up shop on Chestnut Street and routinely approached customers and the city's homeless people with heroin and other narcotics, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police spotted a male and female dealing drugs and approaching customers outside 10 Chestnut St. about 7:20 p.m. After watching a transaction take place, the undercover officers on stakeout called in backup to have the customer arrested, Delaney said.

The officers then converged in on the two dealers and a foot chase ensued after the suspects spotted them. Both dealers were caught and police confiscated bags of heroin and crack cocaine that were packaged for sale, and nearly $350 in cash, Delaney said.

The dealers were identified as Geovanie Guzman, 22, of an unknown address, and Jessica Cruz, 36, of 10 Chestnut St. Both individuals were charged with distribution of heroin, distribution of crack cocaine and violation of a drug-free park zone due to their close proximity to Merrick Park, Delaney said.

The buyer, 38-year-old Jerry Rivera, of 307 Chestnut St., was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of heroin, according to an arrest report.

"Narcotics detectives will be closely monitoring the area of Chestnut Street and the park located at Spring and Pearl streets to stop any type of drug sales from taking place downtown," Delaney said.

All three suspects were scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Wednesday.
