Report: More criminal illegal detainees released in AZ than any other state

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Government officials decided to release more than 2,000 immigrants facing deportation in 2013 strictly for budget reasons, according to a new oversight report from the Homeland Security Department.

Of the 2,211 illegal immigrants released from the facilities, the report says a lot of them have prior criminal convictions.

A chart from the report shows San Antonio, Texas released the highest number of total detainees, but the ICE field office in Phoenix released the most criminal detainees, approximately 116 out of 617 across the country.

Each bed in the detention centers costs about $122 a day. At the time of these releases, ICE had too many detainees; they were spending over $4.1 million every day.

The department's IG says ICE officials failed to plan for the rise of immigrant arrests and failed to keep track of how much money they spent.

The report says ICE didn't tell the Obama Administration what it was doing, so the administration wrongly denied for weeks that so many people had been released.
