New Haven police are investigating a homicide early Sunday morning in the area of Strong and Valley streets.

According to police, officers were called to the scene around 1:50 a.m. on the report of gunfire. police said at least one person, 58-year-old Darryl McNair, was killed.

Police said McNair was treated at the scene by medical personnel and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. McNaid was reportedly playing a card game, Solitaire, on his computer when he was shot.

Chandra Costin is McNair's stepdaughter.

"Mom was holding him, telling him to stay with her, (then) the ambulance took him out," Costin said.

Although the investigation is in its early stages, at this time it appears McNair was an innocent bystander who was in his home when he was struck by a stray bullet.

"It was not fair, it wasn't fair for him to live the last day of his life that way." said Beatrice Tartt-Warren, a relative of the family.

Sunday was McNair's birthday, and the family had a celebration for him on Saturday. Despite his death, the family said they will still have a birthday celebration in his memory.

The family is blaming this incident on the rampant violence within the community.
