FERGUSON, MO (CNN) – A second autopsy on Michael Brown's body has been authorized by Attorney General Eric Holder due to “extraordinary circumstances.”

Brown was shot and killed by a police officer Aug. 9. One autopsy has already been conducted by Missouri officials, but Holder said a federal medical examiner will perform another one, at the request of Brown's family.

The results of the second autopsy will be considered in the federal investigation into Brown's death, according to the Department of Justice.

President Barack Obama ordered the FBI and Department of Justice to investigation the shooting last week. Obama is in the middle of a two-week vacation on Martha's Vineyard, but he has been briefed repeatedly on the investigation and protests in Ferguson.
