RFD: No danger from downtown Richmond gas smell

A gas smell lingering over downtown Richmond poses no danger to people in the area, according to Richmond Fire officials.

The gas smell centered near 7th and Hospital streets downtown is due to a lack of water in the stormwater system, according to fire officials. The buildup of gases in the storm water system is not flammable and crews are not advising anyone to evacuate at this time.

However, the Richmond Department of Public Utilities has not confirmed the account by fire officials. Crews are on the scene and say no "escaping gas" has been found in the area. Officials believe windy conditions are causing the spread of the odor.

If citizens smell gas, DPU urges them to call 311.
