WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) -

Surfers Healing is teaching kids living with autism how to hang ten in Wrightsville Beach.

For the ninth consecutive year, professional surfers have teamed up with these families in New Hanover County offering a therapeutic and transformative experience through surfing.

The program is free, paid for by donors and sponsors, giving more than 250 families the chance to get in the water.

Volunteers say the event is indescribable and emotional.

"They come in with a big smile on their face and there's always a calmness about them," Janet Gwaltney said. "They don't want to stop they want to go back and forth and do it several times. And probably the most amazing thing is seeing the parents' reactions to see their child do something they might not could ever have done."
