A 1-year-old girl has died after police said she was stabbed in the stomach on Park Street in Bristol on Monday evening, and her uncle is in police custody, charged with the murder.
Many began hearing the commotion just after 7 p.m. Monday.
"As we were walking over, we heard someone screaming like really awful screams," said neighbor Carrie Bulluss.
Police said the child, Zaniyah Calloway of Bristol, was rushed out in the arms of resident suffering from a serious laceration to her mid-section. Officers immediately began providing Zaniyah medical attention. She was then rushed to Bristol Hospital and flown by a Life Star helicopter to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, where she died as a result of her injuries.
Her uncle, 36-year-old Arthur Hapgood of Waterbury, was babysitting Zaniyah at the time of the incident. Police located him on the scene and took him into custody without incident.
Police have charged Hapgood with murder with special circumstances, as the victim was under 16 years old, along with reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor because an 11-year-old witnessed the incident. That child was not harmed.
Hapgood is being held on a $1.5 million bond and will appear in Bristol Superior Court on Tuesday.
Police were expected to be on the scene for most of the night, and officers said they were waiting for a search warrant so they could enter the home.
