YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, CANADA (CBC NEWS/CNN) – More than 300 fires are burning in northern Canada and millions of acres have been scorched.

Crews are battling what the country's environmental agency says are heavy smoke blanketing the Yellowknife region, affecting air quality.

A Northwest Territories Forestry officer explained what crews, who've been camping for weeks, are doing.

"They have kitbag lunches with them, water, a day pack, you're basically walking around in the bush, looking around for hot spots, putting them out. It's very tedious work, very tiring as well," NWT Forestry Officer Ernie Francis said.

Usually, the fire season would be ending soon, but there's been little rain this summer.
