Storms roll as AZ monsoon delivers another punch

PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

An area of low pressure aloft and the associated pool of cold air made its way across Arizona on Thursday night and Friday morning, with some strong storms producing gusty wind and hail the size of quarters.

A large swath of rain held together Thursday night as it moved in from the west and covered the Valley from Surprise to Ahwatukee.

The storm surge produced "cool" Friday morning temperatures in the mid-70s in Phoenix, CBS 5 Meteorologist Katie Baker said. Some areas reached into the upper 60s, but temperatures were expected to reach the mid-90s by Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued an airport weather warning Thursday night for Sky Harbor International Airport due to lightning within 10 miles of the airport.

Parts of Maricopa County were under a blowing dust advisory that included portions of Interstate 8 and Interstate 10, as well as Tonopah and Gila Bend.

The storm especially hit the Buckeye area, which received 0.87 inches of rain.

In Yuma, more than 1,600 households lost power late Thursday afternoon.

Arizona Public Service spokesman Alan Bunnell said the outages were likely due to heavy winds and lightning.

According to the National Weather Service, winds of at least 50 mph have been hitting Yuma throughout the day. There was also 1-inch hail reported at the Yuma Proving Ground.

Drier and quieter weather appears to be in the outlook for the weekend with daytime highs a little closer to normal, which puts the Valley just above the 100-degree mark on Saturday and Sunday.
