Hopewell barber waits to hear from family during Fort Lee lockdown

FORT LEE, VA (WWBT) -

The lockdown during an active shooter situation also put the community surrounding Fort Lee on alert.

Many people know soldiers and families who work and live on the base and it was a very tense time Monday morning, as they watched and waited for the all clear.

NBC12 spoke to one man whose wife and kids were on base when the alert went out.

Impressions Barber Shop had only been open an hour when Fort Lee was put under lockdown.  It's down the street from the base and Cory Cole's wife is a soldier there.

"I asked her why, she said she wasn't sure but the sirens started going off and we got some calls from people on base and we heard it was an active shooter," said Cole.

It would be about another hour before Cole's wife found out, the active shooter was a fellow soldier who took a gun to her own head. That soldier was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Cole's wife wasn't his only concern his children were also in their house on base with a babysitter. He did hear from his wife after the lockdown was lifted.

Fellow barber Greg Hall says he was thinking of all his customers who are soldiers.

"It's a shock," he said. "I mean you hear about these tragic incidents, [but] that's close to home."

On Fort Lee's Facebook page family members of other soldiers post their concerns.

A mom, whose son is on base, called it, "The scariest moment of my life."  Another mother wrote, "My daughter was there for AIT, I was happy to find out she's alright."

"It's frightening," said Shirley Walker. She drove by the police cars in front of the gate. "It's dangerous, she could have killed somebody else."

Now these people in the community tell NBC12 they are left wondering what would drive a soldier to do something so desperate.
