KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - A Sullivan County school closed its playground and outside areas today after multiple reports of wildlife on school grounds.

Rock Springs Elementary School sent out a letter to parents saying a black rat snake was found in the school and three black rate snakes were found outside the building last week.

The letter from principal Dr. Josh Davis said a black bear was spotted on the playground as county workers mowed the grass.

"Because of the recent events and increase in animal sightings, we are temporarily closing our outside environments, including the playground, to give nature time to take care of itself and our maintenance department time to assess the situation and come to a resolution that is both effective in remedying the problem and protecting our students and staff," Davis said.

"It is important to point out that our school is nestled on three sides by woods, a creek, and a pond," Davis wrote.

Davis said students will be allowed to play in the buildings until the outside issues are resolved.
