New liquor delivery service comes to CT

FARMINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Pizza, flowers and even groceries can be delivered to homes in under an hour, but now wine is a possibility.

A new service debuting in Connecticut hopes to make that possibility a reality.

Ultra is a company that partners with area stores, and after just a few clicks on a phone or computer, wine can be delivered to a doorstep in under one hour.

While many people like to physically pick out their bottles of wine, others may be too busy to stop at a store like Wine Cellars 4 in Farmington. Now, they can skip the trip altogether and order a bottle online.

"I give them a time when I expect it to be delivered. Normally we'll do it within an hour in a perfect world," said Steven Leon of Wine Cellars 4.

The Ultra site partners with local package stores to make the deliveries happen, and using the service is pretty simple. Customers will type in their zip code, select a bottle and pay for it and then an email is sent to them.

"All of my inventory is in the system," Leon said.

The price customers pay in the store is the same price online, but customers will need to spend more than $20 to receive the delivery service.

There are also some safeguards in place so that minors don't end up with any alcohol.

"When we deliver, we take a picture of the license," Leon said. "My employees know, if they're not 100 percent sure, get back in the car and bring it back."

The service is only available in Farmington, West Hartford and Hartford right now, but the company hopes to expand to other parts of the state.
