Two groups of boaters are trying to keep people safe with a new life jacket loaning kiosk on the Columbia River.
Members of the Columbia River Yachting Association and the Daughters of Neptune finished installing the kiosk at the boat on Marine Drive near N.E. 43rd Avenue.
The kiosk offers free life jackets to use if you don't have one.
"This is where people come to boat and get into the rivers, and if you' don't have a life jacket with you, you're flirting with danger. We saw that recently in the news" said Doug Romjue with the Columbia River Yachting Association. "There's just no good reason, if you're not a swimmer, to be in that water without a life jacket on."
The life jacket loaning station is already being used. While volunteers were putting the finishing touches on it, a family borrowed one of the life jackets.
