Connecticut commuter rail passengers will pay more in the New Year to ride the train.
Starting Jan. 1, fares on the New Haven Line and Shore Line East will increase about 1 percent. All rail fare types, including weekly and monthly, will be affected.
The increase stems from legislation requiring passengers to help contribute toward the cost of the new M-8 rail cars being added to active service. Additional 1 percent increases are scheduled in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Of the 405 M-8 rail cars ordered, 391 have been delivered. All 405 cars are expected to be in service in February.
The new cars are used on the New Haven Line, but state transportation officials say they'll eventually be used on Shore Line East.
