Madison police said they are investigating allegations of a student being sexually assaulted by a school staff member at Daniel Hand High School.
Police said after they were notified about the allegations by a school resource officer they launched an investigation to look into whether an employee sexually assaulted one of her students.
Sources told Eyewitness News that it is a female teacher being investigated for an inappropriate relationship with a male student who is reportedly an athlete and a minor.
“It's very inappropriate. Something that definitely shouldn't be happening,” said Greg Bellinger, who is a senior at Daniel Hand High School.
Police said the Madison school district has taken all appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the students.
"It's traumatic for not only the student involved and the entire student body. Teachers are in a position of trust as are all staff members at the school with the students and when that trust is compromised in any way it's going to cause a large impact on the entire student body," said Madison police Sgt. Joseph Race.
Police said the teacher allegedly involved was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. They also said the time frame of when the relationship happened is unclear.
"The Madison Police Department has been assured by Superintendent Thomas Scarice that 'protecting the welfare of students is our highest priority and the district will fully cooperate with any criminal investigation,'" a press release said.
School officials are working with police and the state's Department of Children and Families to conduct the investigation.
No arrests have been made yet.
