HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

A group of Connecticut legislators plans to voice support for a bill earmarking $150,000 in matching state assistance to a program attempting to combat student debt.

The proposed legislation would provide funding to Serve Here Connecticut, a privately financed initiative that matches young adults with jobs in local government or at nonprofit agencies serving children, the elderly and arts. The employer receives a $10,000 grant to help cover the participant's first year's salary while the young adult receives $10,000 to cut their academic debt or pay for future study.

Young adults, ages 18 to 29 years old, would be eligible to participate.

A news conference was planned at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford on Wednesday to discuss the program, which has already raised nearly $114,000 in private donations.
