1:59 Comment From Julie

Hi, my name is Julie, I heard there is more snow coming for Friday will it be bad? I work on Fri and would like a heads up. Thanks.

WFSB Weather Team:

hi Julie - it's Mark Dixon... yes, once Colbie is behind us, another (but considerably weaker) storm could produce snow late Thursday into Friday

2:00 p.m. WFSB Weather Team:

Frank Stelzel asked what is the rate of snow at its heaviest... at the peak of Colbie, we anticipate 2-4" per hour, that will significantly reduce visibility.

2:04 p.m. WFSB Weather Team:

Lorna has asked about the potential of power outages... Lorna, yes - power outages are a legitimate concern... the amount of snow combined with high wind is problematic. the silver lining is that the snow will be lighter/fluffy ...meaning it won't stick as much on the trees and weigh them down

2:07 WFSB Weather Team:

lots of folks are curious as to when the most intense part will occur... we expect Colbie to ramp up this evening, peaking overnight with the worst of the wind/snow between midnight and noon Tuesday

2:07 Comment From RSlamon

Hi will the snow pose a threat to roofs?

2:08 WFSB Weather Team:

hi R Slamon - it won't be a heavy, wet snow... so initially it won't be an issue... but down the road if/when we get more snow and/or rain, it could become an issue

2:08 Comment From William

is there something Brewing for Sunday night ?

2:09 WFSB Weather Team:

hi William - yes... actually there is a chance for more snow late Thursday into Friday; then, again late Sunday into Monday

2:09 Comment From Danielle Michele

Danielle Michele If Governor Malloy has issued a statewide travel ban beginning at 9 p.m. Monday in anticipation of what will be the heaviest part of the storm. All state roads will be closed. The Raw Event in Hartford should be cancelled tonight....Right????

2:09 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Danielle - it is our understanding that the Raw event at the XL Center has been postponed

2:09 Comment From Mari

Why is it with a state of emergency declared and a travel ban that Stop and Shop is open regular hours and requires employees to report?

2:10 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Mari - it's up to stores to make the call

2:10 Comment From Matt

I live in Portland and i'm curious if that area has a good chance for power outages?

2:11 WFSB Weather Team:

Hi Matt - power outages will likely be scattered throughout the state... we don't expect to become widespread

2:11 Comment From Kate Coupe

Kate Coupe Why do you needlessly name winter storms? Its not cute. Its not funny. Is it so hard to follow the common protocol for naming any storm?

2:12 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Kate - WFSB has a rich tradition, popular with many, of naming winter storms that dates back to 1971

2:12 Comment From m.A23

At what time the snow will hit in the waterbury area

2:12 WFSB Weather Team:

hi mA23 - the snow this afternoon with light and scattered, it ramps up this evening... becoming steadier/heavier, especially after 6p

2:12 Comment From Shannon

Hi, Mark! How will Storm Colbie effect the morning commute Wednesday.

2:14 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Shannon! ...the impact will be big as clean up will be underway, despite the wind/snow being over.

2:14 Comment From Matt

will the heavy winds start early this evening

2:14 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Matt - the wind will start gusting over 30mph after 7pm

2:14 Comment From RSlamon

Shouldn't some of it melt by the weekend?

2:15 WFSB Weather Team:

hi - not really, and we are anticipating more snow (albeit lighter) Thursday night into Friday...

2:15 Comment From Ethan

HoW much snow for New Ha

2:15 WFSB Weather Team:

For New Haven, 15-30"

2:15 Comment From Joseph

What will the winds be like up in northern Connecticut - and will northern CT be less prone to power outages vs southern?

2:16 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Joseph - the wind will be an issue state-wide, coastal SE CT could see the strongest gusts

2:16 Comment From Ethan

How much Snow In new Hartford ct ?

2:17

WFSB Weather Team:

hi Ethan and everyone else curious about the totals... for the state, we will see 15-30" ...now within our borders, there could be banding where we get some totals over 30" - we'll have to see where those set up as the storm starts evolving

2:17 Comment From Robyn

What are your thoughts on school delays or closings for Wednesday?

2:18 WFSB Weather Team:

i'd say stay to wfsb.comand channel 3 for the latest... while we provide the forecast, it is up to each district to make the call ;)

2:18 Comment From William

2:19 Comment From Julie

I have to go to work Fri. morning will it be bad? would like a heads up for the travels.

2:19 WFSB Weather Team:

hi Julie - it's Mark Dixon... yes, once Colbie is behind us, another (but considerably weaker) storm could produce snow late Thursday into Friday

2:19 Comment From Kylie

How much snow should we expect if there are going to be snow drifts?

2:19 WFSB Weather Team:

4-5 fee!

2:19 Comment From BN

I had planned to fly in to central CT to visit family Thursday - Sunday... should I cancel my trip?

2:20 WFSB Weather Team:

hi BN - it's tough to say this early, stay tuned! check with your airline, too... there could be a domino effect due to Colbie

2:20 Comment From Sandy

Double Snow Day for students, what do you guys predict

2:20 WFSB Weather Team:

certainly is in the realm of possibility, check with your superintendent ;)

2:20 Comment From RSlamon

2:21 Comment From Laurie

How long will the high winds be with us?

2:21 WFSB Weather Team:

gusts 45-55 mph

2:22 Comment From i thought the storm was named Juno

I think Waterbury was very smart to close the schools. Too many hills here and it snowed already this morning.

2:22 WFSB Weather Team:

safety is a priority!

2:22 Comment From RSlamon

Beside the wind being an issue the snow should be light enough to shovel correct?

2:23 WFSB Weather Team:

not heavy or wet... so it should be easier to shovel, but there will be a lot of it, so plan accordingly - be smart if not in good health!

2:23 Comment From RSlamon

4-5 feet?? Is that worst case?

2:23  WFSB Weather Team:

perhaps in drifts, but 60" of accumulating snow is not in the forecast

2:24 Comment From Sandy

Thanks for all that you guys do to keep us informed!

2:24 WFSB Weather Team:

thanks Sandy, you rock!

2:24 Comment From Lynniemp

How far north will the Thursday/Friday storm reach?

2:24 WFSB Weather Team:

from Southern New England, all the way into Northern New England

2:24 Comment From Steve

What exactly does a travel ban mean? Will those who plow for a living be allowed on the roads?

2:25 WFSB Weather Team:

good question, we will get that answered - tune into Channel 3 tonight starting at 5

2:25 Comment From DD

Will the roads be OK around 6pm in teh middle of the Middle of the State

2:25 WFSB Weather Team:

2:25 Comment From Bill

some people are saying it will be as bad as the blizzard of I think 69, what do you think

2:26 WFSB Weather Team:

it could rival the blizzard larry (1978) and charlotte (2013)

2:26 Comment From Sheri

Can Scot Haney come over and help me shovel? I live in East Hampton..

2:26 WFSB Weather Team:

2:26 Comment From BrownTrucks

When will the visibility improve enough to leave home?

2:27 WFSB Weather Team:

leaving your home is not advisable until at least Wednesday, we'll let you know when the travel ban is lifted... but trust there will be white-out conditions

2:27 Comment From RSlamon

any chance of ice?

2:27 WFSB Weather Team:

due to the set-up and track of this storm, it is all snow that we are forecasting

2:27 Comment From Joseph

Is there even a chance that schools will reopen Wednesday?

2:28 WFSB Weather Team:

possibly, but there will be a lot to dig out from... so stay with wfsb.comfor the very latest

2:28 Comment From I work in hartford and live in Torrington.

Hi Mark --- I work in Hartford and live in Torrington. I drive 44 and 202 all the way into downtown Torrington. I'm not sure if I should leave now or if its safe to wait till 4. And there are no traffic cams to check the area. Can you advise?

2:29 WFSB Weather Team:

it's best to err on the side of caution

2:29 WFSB Weather Team:

leaving sooner than later is probably best

2:29 Comment From When I look at your weather maps I see a donut hole where higher levels of snow will like occur. What causes that and what can make that move east (where I live) and west.

2:31

Hi All - it's been fun, Bruce DePrest is now taking over... see you on the TV, online and on social media ;)

2:32

Comment From Joe

Are all models in agreement with snow totals?

2:32

WFSB Weather Team:

Hi! Bruce DePrest with you now. The models are very consistent with the storm track and are generally forecasting the same totals. 15-30"

2:32

Comment From TomP

Are you leaning towards the EURO model?

2:33

WFSB Weather Team:

The European model is handing the storm well as are all of the others like the GFS and the NAM.

2:33

Comment From can privat Plowing contractors be on road

Do we know if private plow contractors can be on roads during storm

2:34

WFSB Weather Team:

Not sure, but we will ask our news team to look into it.

2:34

Comment From BrownTrucks

When will the temperatures moderate to assist in melting?

2:34

WFSB Weather Team:

Temps will likely stay below freezing until maybe Thursday afternoon. It will stay very cold through Wednesday.

2:34

Comment From RSlamon

Bruce is there a bright side to this storm? Everyone is predicting doom and gllom

2:36

WFSB Weather Team:

The ski areas love this snow as do other businesses that rely on snow such as plow drivers and those who sell and service snow blowers, etc. When the snow melts it will replenish our stream and reservoirs. Pretty too!!!

2:36

Comment From Kylie

is ther supposed to be another storm fri

2:37

WFSB Weather Team:

Yes, but not nearly this big. Perhaps a few inches and we are watching another storm for Sunday night and Monday. Stay tuned!

2:38

WFSB Weather Team:

One of the big concerns I have been hearing is the potential for power outages. Personally, I hate losing power. The risk is low to moderate since the snow will be drier and fluffier, and hopefully the wind will keep much of the snow off the trees and power lines. However, winds gusting to 50 mph can cause scattered power outages even without snow.

2:38

Comment From RSlamon

Bruce what will max gusts be like in Wethersfield?

2:39

WFSB Weather Team:

I would say, Wethersfield will see gusts in the 35-45 mph range.

2:42

WFSB Weather Team:

People are calling us asking if this will be an historic snowstorm for CT. That is a word that has been used to describe what is happening in NYC. This storm in CT will rival the blizzard of 1978 (Blizzard Larry) and Blizzard Charlotte (Feb 2013) in terms of snowfall totals. However, it'll be hard to beat the '78 blizzard when it comes to persistently strong wind gusts. Winds then gusted to over 50 mph for hours on end. This storm won't be as windy.

2:42

Comment From RSlamon

Bruce I want to say thanks to you and the team for not scaring me like the other stations are doing

2:43

WFSB Weather Team:

We are here to inform and keep you safe. but not to frighten anyone. We're keeping it real!

2:43

Comment From Cindy

What about the max winds for Granby?

2:43

WFSB Weather Team:

35-40 mph wind gusts from time to time especially midnight through noon Tuesday.

2:43

Comment From Kevin

Did you buy your milk and bread yet?!

2:44

WFSB Weather Team:

Actually, yes! My wife did that yesterday. I didn't want to go anywhere near a store! LOL. Plus, our cars are gassed up and the gas can is full for the generator.

2:44

Comment From Laurie

Thank you for always keeping us informed. You guys are awesome

2:45

WFSB Weather Team:

Thank you very much for the kind words and thank you for watching Channel 3. Stay safe!

2:45

Comment From Laurie

You guys be safe too.

2:45

WFSB Weather Team:

Will do!

2:50

WFSB Weather Team:

We have been in a snow drought most of this winter, but we started to catch up with Winter Storm Blake on Saturday. By the time this storm is over, we will be perhaps 20" above normal for the season. Snow lovers will be very happy! As you go northward into MA and Northern New England, snowfall will be a little less from this storm. However, Coastal Maine is going to get hammered.

2:50

Comment From RSlamon

Bruce any chance this will be mostly done by noon tomorow/

2:51

WFSB Weather Team:

Nope! The snow will let up somewhat tomorrow afternoon, but there will still be considerable blowing and drifting.

2:52

Comment From RSlamon

When will the heavy snow be done?

2:52

WFSB Weather Team:

The heaviest will be done by around noon tomorrow, but it won't come to a complete end until Tuesday night after midnight.

2:53

WFSB Weather Team:

It is just before 3pm now. The next model runs will be coming in shortly. We get new runs 4 times per day. We will keep you updated constantly with new information.

2:53

Comment From RSlamon

Lat question. Will I be able to take my dog out tomorrow morning?

2:56

WFSB Weather Team:

That is a great question! You have got to keep your pets close. First of all, it is going to be windy and cold with wind chill temperatures in the single digits. Pets feel the cold wind just like we do. Lastly, during Blizzard Charlotte, we know of a number of dogs that got out and didn't make it home. Pet owners really need to keep their pet on a leash because plows won't be able to see them over such large snow banks.

2:56

Comment From Kylie

Bruce, will there be a storm on friday???

2:56

WFSB Weather Team:

Yes, but a few inches instead of a few feet!

2:59

WFSB Weather Team:

As we wrap up this web chat, I want to put this storm in perspective. I have been forecasting CT weather for nearly 37 years here at Channel 3 and the Travelers Weather Service. This will likely be in the top 10 of storms that I have covered. Stay tuned, stay safe, and we'll see you on Eyewitness News starting at 5:00.
