Fate of proposed higher texting while driving fines unclear

HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

Connecticut lawmakers are revisiting whether heftier fines are needed to stop motorists from texting while driving.

The General Assembly's Transportation Committee on Monday heard testimony on several bills that would create tougher penalties. One mirrors the penalties for driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Another would add $100 to each existing fine.

State Rep. Tony Guerrera, the committee's co-chairman, acknowledged he's unsure what if any action will be taken in this session. Lawmakers have tried to combat texting while driving, recently passing legislation that added distracted driving to the moving violations made available to insurance companies.

Guerrera said he hopes the automobile industry will address the issue with technology that prevents the use of certain devices while a vehicle is moving. He called the problem an epidemic.
