A kindergarten teacher is looking for a new job after police said she was getting drunk at school.
A parent was helping with a Valentine's party when she saw a beer can in the classroom and called police.
40-year-old Jennifer Rich has been charged with public intoxication and child endangerment.
Police in Ankeny, IA, say she failed a breathalyzer test and had six beer cans in her classroom--two of them empty.
“I'm in shock actually,” said parent Alicia Nagel. “For a teacher to have alcohol in the school and not be immediately fired kind of upsets me.”
School officials said the teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave.
“It's unfortunate and I'm glad nobody was hurt,” said Stacy Dullard.
Chief Human Resource Officer Jenifer Owenson said the school district conducted its own investigation, and gave Rich the option to resign.
On Monday night the Ankeny School board accepted her resignation.
“The principal has been in touch with all of the parents over the weekend, (and has) assured them that their children were never in any kind of harm,” Owenson said.
Rich's profile -- which has now been taken down from the school's website -- says she been teaching in Ankeny since 2001.
Owenson said school officials did not know this was an ongoing problem in the classroom.
